Frequently Asked Equestrian Surface Questions
How do equestrian surfaces affect horse performance?
An equestrian surface is a specialised material or footing used in horse riding arenas and tracks to provide an environment that is safe for horses and riders. This is perfect for a common arena, or competition venues.
If you’re looking to make your horse happy and keep them healthy, our equestrian rubber chippings are an ideal solution! All of our rubber chippings are created using recycled, non-toxic materials, and there are many advantages to using our rubber surfaces for your horse arenas.
The equestrian chippings we provide are durable, easy to maintain, and provide a smooth and comfortable ride for riders and improve the performance of your horses!
How often should equestrian surfaces be maintained?
Regular maintenance of equestrian surfaces is essential to keep the surface in optimal condition. Maintenance tasks may include, watering, levelling, and adding fresh material to your equestrian surfaces as needed.
What is the ideal depth for an equestrian surface?
The ideal depth for equestrian surfaces varies depending on the type of surface and intended use but typically ranges from 2 to 6 inches (5-15 cm). Our Rubber Chippings should be laid at no more than 2 inches (50mm) depth.
What should you use on the ground of a horse arena?
Typical equestrian surface arena construction consists of a 100mm layer of silica sand followed by a 50mm layer of rubber chippings.
The silica sand should be laid on top of the membrane and then compacted using a vibrating roller.
The rubber chippings are then laid on top and the surface is finished.
You should avoid putting the rubber directly onto your membrane as the rubber is a loose material and your membrane will move, that is why you need the equestrian sand to keep your membrane in situ.
Can you use wood chips for a horse arena?
You can use wood chips for equestrian surfaces and other gallop surfaces, but they don’t last as long as materials such as rubber chippings and premixed surfaces.
What Our Clients Say About Us
Reasonably speedy delivery of 24 bags, mainly grey. Easy to carry the bags around. Easy to spread it out. Very good product. Covered one terrace in our garden with it. Recommended.
Slight delay with stock on the coloured chippings I ordered, but once sorted delivered quickly and without any bother. Really happy with the quality and colour for the 20mm chippings. A few small wires found while laying it, but the kids have been playing on it barefoot for a few weeks now (not recommended by the supplier, but kids will do what kids will do) and nobody's got a wire in their foot yet 🙂 I used 100mm deep to give a nice soft landing under the monkey bars then 50mm deep elsewhere, giving a nice tidy finish to the kids play area. As a bonus, the cats have shown no interest in using it as a toilet.
I placed an order with PRS back in May 2024. Delivery was very quick and hassle free, with great communication throughout. I am very pleased with the product, and would recommend.
Expert advice, great customer service and quick pick up of products. Product is high quality and would definitely recommend. Green rubber mulch 10kg packs 👍
